What are PTO gearboxes ?
A power take-off, most commonly referred to by its acronym PTO, is generally a popular type of mechanical power transmission in the mobile machine market. PTO is generally the process of transferring high power and torque from the engine of trucks and tractors, usually through transmission. In combination with a gearbox and pump base, almost any type of mechanical energy transmission is possible.
There are actually 3 popular PTO technologies in the mobile machine market; tractor-mounted, truck-driven, and engine-crank-driven, although the latter is not usually referred to as a PTO. Crankshaft-driven power transfer strategies are typically used for hydraulic pumps mounted on the front of on-road trucks, including plows/spreaders or cement mixers. A small shaft with a U-joint is attached to a yoke coupler to turn the pump. Having said that, this drive configuration is not usually called a PTO.
The tractor PTO is as big as the tractor. Most early PTOs were driven by a transmission located on the rear of the tractor for quick positioning of the output shaft. The transmission type of PTO only engages when the transmission clutch is also engaged and is directly connected to the transmission to ensure that the PTO is not actuated when the clutch is depressed.
The transmission PTO is turning when the transmission is driving the wheels. This also means that the tool can also drive the transmission backward when the clutch is depressed, say downhill, or when the accessory has a higher moment of inertia mechanism, causing the drive wheels to surge. This is avoided by adding a dedicated overrunning clutch to the PTO, which prevents torque from being applied in the opposite direction.
A resident PTO typically uses a two-stage transmission clutch. The first stage of the clutch operates the driven section in the transmission and the second stage of the clutch controls the engagement of the PTO. This strategy allows for an independent handle of the transmission to ensure the PTO remains operational regardless of transmission clutch activity, just as the tractor itself is stopped. As an example with any tractor that uses a mower attachment, this is the minimum; you can’t turn off the mower when you tap the clutch on hillsides and around trees.
The Independent PTO has a fully independent engaged clutch that works completely independently of the transmission clutch. To engage the PTO, push a button or lever; it’s that simple. Typically, a lever-operated clutch needs to be activated prior to a separate PTO switch. Not only is the system simple, but the independent PTO is often activated when the tractor is stopped or moved. Standalone PTOs are available in both mechanical and hydrostatic configurations, and as you can imagine, with the popularity of hydrostatic drives, the hydraulic type is very popular.

How do I remove the PTO shaft from the transmission?

The metric system is different from domestic. The domestic ones are round or square, and the metric ones are star-shaped, bell-shaped or football-shaped. Here are some helpful tips:
First, you need to stop the tractor, engage the parking brake and turn off the ignition. Then you need to find the implement’s PTO shaft. This should connect to the tractor’s PTO shaft, which can be found at the end of the shaft. If you’re not sure where the PTP shaft connects to the gearbox, look for the safety shroud that covers it.
While it may not be necessary to remove the PTO shaft from the transmission, it is important to remember that this part of the driveline can cause serious injury or even death. Fortunately, modern heavy-duty trucks are equipped with power take-offs. To access the spur gears, remove the transmission cover. A truck-mounted PTO is more versatile, but not as versatile as a tractor-mounted PTO.
